Choosing php4-mysql (highest version available is 4.4.4-9) causes libaprutil1 to uninstall ALL Apache software (ACK!) as libaprutil1 requires php4-mysql version 4.4.4-10 or higher ??????

This is not a bug. Php4 is no longer in lenny and no longer supported
(except in stable). libaprutil1 1.2.12+dfsg-7 is not compatible with
php4-mysql 4.4.4-9. You have to upgrade to php5 if you want to
continue using php with mysql.
Or you can stay with the old libaprutil1, or you can recompile php4
with a similar modification to the one introduced in php5 5.2.6-1.
