What kind of problems did you have when adding a DocumentRoot?

Just to be sure: 
/etc/mods-enabled/autoindex.conf exists as well and is not empty?


If that's not it, you would have to describe or post your config in 
more detail. It's not possible to determine the problem from the 
information you gave so far.
