About Laptops, probably look into the archives of debian-laptop@lists.debian.org (or subscribe and ask there)
I would not make the choice depend on the keypboard. I guess the keyboard of a laptop can be replaced (manually), i don't know how much effort it would be though. Ideally, only a little plug connector. So you could just order the replacement. Do it together, 10y kids have fun screwing with hardware :)
Hmm, i wonder about the future of this list. There isn't so much point in having amd64 as something exclusively anymore, and if not simply shut down, then it should be renamed to something with a new focus....no ?
