Except it's empty!

/etc/X11/xorg.conf is the correct file.

the newer xserver packages are using hal to automagically configure X.
look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and you will see the devices being added and
configured

I did not realize that had become the new method, although I do remember someone ranting that hal was taking over X.

Thanks Alex, Now I'll look into just what hal is doing to my system.
