There is plenty of possibilities on my computer :)
# update-alternatives --config java

There are 5 alternatives which provide `java'.

  Selection    Alternative
-----------------------------------------------
          1    /usr/lib/jvm/ia32-java-6-sun/jre/bin/java
          2    /etc/alternatives/kaffe-system/bin/java
*         3    /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java
 +        4    /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/jre/bin/java
          5    /usr/bin/gij-4.1

Press enter to keep the default[*], or type selection number:

I think the difference is that I use dselect since I found it better in
resolving conflicts although it sometimes uses brute force.
