Hi Chris, 

silly question: Did you install nvidia-glx ? If yes, try to reinstall the 
package nvidia-glx.

Does it work ?

If not, try my way: 

1. Remove /etc/init.d/kdm 
2. Do a startx from the prompt as root. 
3. Now you can see, what really happens.
