supported webcams?

I would like to buy an usb webcam, for use with ekiga, skype etc. under
Debian GNU/Linux (amd64). How/where can I check whether a given camera is
supported by current kernels or not? Suggestions on cameras known to work
well? I was eyeing a Creative LiveCam, but I have no idea as to whether it
will work or not, and I could not find any spec sheet detaining its innards
so that I could look in the kernel source tree and see whether their driver
is there...
