Hmm, I have reinstalled all cups/hplip/foomatic stuff, nothing has
changed :-(

I wonder if it is not a kernel problem (2.6.16) for the x86_64 arch with the usb port,
because I can't get reading my usb stick too (works fine on my i686 distro):

If by x86_64 you mean the standard amd64 debian distro, I'm using cups with a USB printer with no difficulties. I'm running the 2.6.17 kernel.
