had the same problem on 2 of my boxes.

have a look in your /boot directory

change the sym links for initrd.img vmlinuz so that they point to the
18-1 files 

and initrd.img.old vmlinuz.old so that they point to your last good
install

then run update-grub and then run dpkg-reconfigure
linux-image-2.6.18-1-amd64

All should be okay then
