There is work in progress to make amd64 an official port. It's not as
simple as adding a new port, because we have too many already for our
mirror sites to deal with. Instead the archive will be split to allow
mirrors to just contain selected ports.
But this won't change the problem. Whenever you are running unstable you
can have package skew as I explained. It is mostly a problem when you
are not using the major platform which is currently i386. Unless most
developers switch to amd64 this will remain a problem. In the future
probably most will but not too soon perhaps.
