No, I do not think so. I work at an uni in Germany and use a German Debian
mirror, so the connection is pretty fast and good.

It seems that I use the 'etch' distro, because from the syslog file i
retrieved, that the install program reads first the Release notes in the
http://www.de.debian.org/.../debian/.../etch/ directory. How can I choose
and other distibution, e.g. sarge ?

I use SATA HD.

It is connected to the SATA1 port in the mobo. I guess that the VIA driver
is used, because at startup, the BIOS says that no IDE driver is found and
the PROMISE BIOS is not installed.
