The KDE printing system includes the ability to output PDF or PostScript.  I 
don't know about GNOME, if that's what you prefer, because I haven't used it 
much, but I would guess it would include something similar.

Question:  do you *really* need PDF?  Most PDF viewers also can handle 
PostScript files -- even gzipped ones renamed to look, to users of legacy 
OSes, like PDFs!
