The problem is caused by the bind mounts that you probably used to build
the IA32 chroot. The bug was fixed months ago in GNOME's 2.9 branch
(maybe the fix got into 2.8.3, but I can't say for sure; I know it's not
in unstable). Wait for GNOME 2.10 to hit the unstable archive, which I
think should be happening soon, or if you dare, use the packages from
experimental.
