Please make sure you have:

mrvn@frosties:~% ls -lhd /usr/lib32
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 24 2005-05-08 20:01 /usr/lib32 -> /emul/ia32-linux/usr/lib/

Anything else means you have to purge ia32-libs, ia32-libs-dev and
lib32gcc1 and reinstall them. It seems some of the intermittend
versions had that as a dir which breaks things.
