New to non-bootable-CD oriented ports

Hi,

I am totally new to installing w/o downloadable bootable ISO cds. :-)  
Can anyone point me to the docs to get started with this.

Do I have to install on a 32-bit machine, compile it and build my own 
bootable CD for my AMD-64 system?
