Turns out there was some kind of bug in the ata_piix module so that it had to be loaded after the ide_generic module and all kinds of incomprehensible kernel babble, all of which can be skipped by simply installing 2.6.9. I was still on 2.6.8. Now my DVD burner is detected and everything is cool. Alex.
