Trouble with installation

Hi!
I have an Athlon 2.2GHz/ASUS A8V delux computer with SATA drives I've
been trying to
install from the installer on
ftp://debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org/pub/debian-amd64/install-images/
that I simply cannot get to work, and I wonder if someone has any ideas
of what I might be
doing wrong?
To begin with I set up my drives as RAID1 using the BIOS software. That
didn't impress
the debian installer one bit, because they never turned up in the
partitioner menu. After using
the terminal and modprobing for sd_mod and sata_promise, the disks
turned up in /dev/scsi/scii,
but not as the expected single unit but rather as two separate, just as
if the hardware RAID
was no hardware RAID at all. Very confusing, but at least they _did_
turn up, a 100%
improvement from the previous state of affairs. I guess I've simply
misunderstood how it's
supposed to work...
Anyhow, now the disks turns up in the installer, but it's impossible to
use the Software RAID
program to get anywhere at all. it's perfectly ok to continue with them
as separate entities,
but I really wanted that RAID1 feature. In the end configuring by hand
in the terminal worked
and I could finally continue setting up LVM on the new RAID1 system.
However, from there on it just won't budge. I've created a root, home,
swap and usr partiion
which get mounted on /target (verified in the terminal window) as they
should, but the installer
just fails to continue with a very non-informative "Installation of the
base system failed" message.
No matter what I do, even in desperation removing both software and
hardware RAID (yes, and
even moving the cables on the motherboard to the non-raid SATA slots)
and using a single disk
fails to go beyond this step. I'm considering giving up and installing
a 32-bit system, but I'd really
love to find a solution for the 64-bit system.
Any advice would be much appreciated,
- - Ronny Wikh
