An upgrade doesn't work because "amd64" is a pure 64 bit architecture. The problem is exactly equivalent to upgrading from i386 to sparc. However, if you boot into i386 with a biarch capable kernel, you can install into a chroot using cdebootstrap in the usual way if you want.

Most people simply run the normal installer on a second partition.
