Bot even he said that it's only necessary if the amd64 port wants to be
*ia32 LSB* certified.

They're not supported at this time.  And as far as I'm concerned, your
argument seems to be that "if you don't support everyone, you shouldn't
support anyone."  That doesn't make any sense.  We support 64-bit amd64,
and that's exactly what many people want.

I'm not aware of any other architecture that can run amd64 binaries.
Perhaps you meant distribution?

Gentoo works the same way we do.

Frankly, I think there are very few people that try to install .debs on
a RedHat or Mandrake system.  And for those that do, they're going to
face a lot more problems than just the name of /lib64.  We're *already*
incompatible with those distributions.  (And while we can often, but not
always, move RPMs *to* Debian -- something we'd continue to be able to
do -- it is very rare that soembody tries to go the other way.)
