I am also very confused about what AMD64 system to buy. I was about
to purchase an Athlon64, but read they would soon be discontinued.
Being almost completely ignorant about hardware, I didn't know how
much this should discourage me. Since I don't have the money to buy a
socket 754 chip, I wondered if it would be cheaper to buy a socket 940
opteron motherboard and chip. So I was wondering if anyone could
explain to me, or point me to a few links, that would explain the
advantages and disadvantages of Athlon64 vs single opteron systems.
It looks like one can get an opteron 146 (2ghz) for about the same
price as an athlon64 3200. I simply have no idea of how they compare
performance-wise, and didn't quickly find anything I could understand
through google.
I hesitate to ask such a simple hardware question on this list, but
any suggestions about where to look for the answers are appreciated.
