The SATA chipset I have was problematic until 2.6.5, or so, but works fine now. This should be possible from the latest D-I images, but if not, it is possible from booting an appropriate kernel off a non-SATA disk and moving things around. I had to do it the hard way, since I set my machine up months ago, but I have myself booting just fine in a machine with software RAID across 4 SATA disks.
