I have this, using a Tyan Motherboard.  The SATA chipset I have was
problematic until 2.6.5, or so, but works fine now.

This should be possible from the latest D-I images, but if not, it is
possible from booting an appropriate kernel off a non-SATA disk and
moving things around.

I had to do it the hard way, since I set my machine up months ago, but I
have myself booting just fine in a machine with software RAID across 4
SATA disks.
