Can't boot amd64 kernel

System: 2x Opteron 242, 8GB RAM, Tyan S2882 board

Tried:
	kernel-image-2.4.23-amd64-smp_20031129.1_amd64.deb
	kernel-image-2.4.23-pre5-amd64-smp_20030927.1-1_amd64.deb

Both of them hang at "initializing cpu #1". Any idea what might bewrong? Does it pay to try and get the boot messages copied down (byhand)?
