errors on kernel compile?

I'm trying to compile the 2.6.20.1 kernel on my multia, it keeps
giving me a constant error message:

{standard input}: Assembler messages:
{standard input}:6: Warning: setting incorrect section attributes for .got

And periodically dies with:

  CC [M] drivers/net/tulip/de2104x.o
drivers/net/tulip/de2104x.c: In function 'de_get_settings':
drivers/net/tulip/de2104x.c:1600: internal compiler error: Segmentation
fault
Please submit a full bug report,
with preprocessed source if appropriate.
See <URL:http://gcc.gnu.org/bugs.html> for instructions.
For Debian GNU/Linux specific bug reporting instructions,
see <URL:file:///usr/share/doc/gcc-4.1/README.Bugs>.
{standard input}: Assembler messages:
{standard input}:6: Warning: setting incorrect section attributes for .got
The bug is not reproducible, so it is likely a hardware or OS problem.
make[3]: *** [drivers/net/tulip/de2104x.o] Error 1
make[2]: *** [drivers/net/tulip] Error 2
make[1]: *** [drivers/net] Error 2
make: *** [drivers] Error 2

Not just on this same driver. If I restart make, it then compiles
that part okay and moves on.
I'm beginning to wonder if this is futile -- with the constant error,
will it be viable? Given the glacial speed of the multia, maybe it's a
waste of time?
