Your tip worked thank you. For the testing of the installer I do not get
much further: Booting the kernel hangs after loading:

qla1280: QLA1040 found on PCI bus2, dev0
[...loading cdrom driver on ncr...]
scsi(1:0): Resetting SCSI BUS
The root disk is on qla1040/sda3.
Sarge is booting with 2.4.27 but not with 2.6.8. Is there still (again?)
something with the qla1280 driver?
