Please don't tell my alpha that gcc 4.1 is not capable to build the
linux kernel:

alf:/etc# cat /proc/version 
Linux version 2.6.17.11 (root@alf) (gcc version 4.1.2 20060814 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-11)) #2 Wed Aug 30 10:01:12 CEST 2006
alf:/etc# uptime
 22:26:53 up 5 days,  1:16,  2 users,  load average: 0.13, 0.09, 0.06

It's naively running that kernel just fine now :-)
