However, this is a (known) shortcoming of Alpha's firmware, which most probably won't be fixed. So a fix needs to be done for the Linux kernel. The fix isn't all that hard, especially since it was coded once in history. See eg. http://lxr.linux.no/source/arch/alpha/kernel/bios32.c?v=2.2.26;a=alpha#L359 for how to do that.
