We never got to compile an SMP kernel with gcc 2.9x, we have/had to
use gcc 3.x. UP kernels, though, worked. Maybe it is a good idea set
up a chroot with e.g. a minimal testing environment and compile a
kernel (e.g. a 2.4.x-kernel) there.
