Miata MX, can't boot past 2.4.18

Hi all.

I've been banging my head against this one for a few weeks now.

I have a 433mhz Miata MX PWS running Debian/testing.

I am currently running it (and writing this email from) the machine running 2.4.18
from kernel-image-2.4.18 Now due to having a Sil CMD680 based IDE controller in the
system that has a 80gb hdd attached to it, along with a 15 and 20gb hdd attached to the
onboard CMD646 chip I need to move to a kernel 2.4.20+ to get access to the CMD680 driver.
To date i've had no luck using either the kernel-images or compiling my own kernel.
I detail below what's happening.

2.4.20-generic
the system boots but I get stuck in an endless media state change on one of my realtek
ethernet interfaces.

2.4.21-3
will boot and then stop at the following point.
Journalled Block Device driver loaded
hda: attached ide-disk driver.
*hang*

I've also compiled a custom kernel using make-kpkg which gets to the same point as the
2.4.21-3 kernel-image see url for a complete output.

http://freeloader.ho3.org/~ngrundy/2.4.21-dmesg

the output of lspci
http://freeloader.ho3.org/~ngrundy/quadros-lspci

commands used to compile kernel

ln -s kernel-source-2.4.21 linux
cd linux
make menuconfig
make-kpkg kernel_image
dpkg -i kernel-image-2.4.21_10.00.Custom_alpha.deb

kernel config file

If anyone could point me in the right direction here I'd be a very happy camper.
