I once popped a 48x Optorite IDE part in my LX164 for testing.
Setup was just as straightforward as on my x86 box--except I had
to set up ide-scsi emulation on the Alpha box (my x86 box is
pure SCSI).

cdrtools-1.10 and xcdroast-0.98alpha9 both worked flawlessly on
alpha through mastering, writing, and verifying.
