I have used the Compaq Java 1.3.1 SDK with good success. They also offer a "Run Time Environment" (RTE) if you don't need the full Developers Kit. You can get it at:

One thing is missing from the Linux version... the "plugin" needed for Mozilla/Netscape/Konq to work with Java. I notice that they have added the "fast VM" to the most recent product. I didn't have this on the version I have been using. Dunno what it does for you....
