Problems with cdrecord

Whenever I try to do anything other than a -scanbus or a -inq with 
cdrecord, I get the following error:

Ruffian:/home/cd_image# cdrecord -prcap dev=1,0,0
Cdrecord 1.8 (--) Copyright (C) 1995-2000 J?rg Schilling
cdrecord: Invalid argument. shmget failed

This happens both with the Debian cdrecord package and with a version I 
built from source.

Anybody had this one?
