Your suggestion worked (-: Any idea why the Alpha distro has a root.bin that
is only 1.3Mb ... I'm just curious because all the others seem fine.

If you have a Linux installation available, try
dd if=root.bin of=/dev/fd0 bs=1024 conv=sync ; sync
instead of rawrite.
