You sure you're not doing something funny with initrd? It seems like the
kernel thinks your SCSI driver should be a module. 

I've been using 2.2.9 on a configuration similar to yours (AS200 4/233) for
quite a while now with no trouble at all.

Use the ncr53c8xx driver.
