problems with new kernel on slink

I'm trying to compile a custom kernel and have noticed a few strange
things. First I installed binutils-2.9.1 and egcs-1.1.2 since the gcc
that came with slink bombs on slhc. Then I got 2.0.38 and compiled it
with the new compiler. My machine (Avanti) boots OK but:

1. netscape (through em86) now dies with sig 11

2. every once in a while I get this sort of messages to the console:

<sc 208(11ffff71b,0,5)>
<sc 208(11fffff2e,0,14)>
<sc 208(11fffff2e,0,14)>
<sc 208(11fffff2e,0,14)>
<sc 208(11fffff2e,0,14)>
<sc 208(11fffff2e,0,14)>
<sc 208(11fffff2e,0,14)>
<sc 208(11fffd9b0,3e8,5)>

3. wmsetbg dies with:

X Error of failed request: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied
)
  Major opcode of failed request: 129 (MIT-SHM)
  Minor opcode of failed request: 3 (X_ShmPutImage)
  Serial number of failed request: 20
  Current serial number in output stream: 22

4. some programs cause the following output to syslog:

   Sep 20 16:29:24 hoth kernel: man: unimplemented OSF mmap flags 0201

NONE of these happen with the kernel that came with slink.

Could anybody explain to me what's causing these problems and how to
go around them? I compiled my own Linux kernels for many years but I
haven't seen this before...

TIA,

-Dragos
