Yes, but as the submitter says, alpha build does have them, look:

[master:joy]$ dpkg -I ftp/dists/potato/main/binary-alpha/sound/xmms* | grep Depends
 Depends: alsalib0.3.0, gdk-imlib1, libart2 (>= 1.0.10-3), libaudiofile0,
libc6.1 (>= 2.1), libesd0 (>= 0.2.10-0.19990424.6), libglib1.2 (>= 1.2.0),
libgnome32 (>= 1.0.10-3), libgnomesupport0 (>= 1.0.10-3), libgnomeui32 (>= 1.0.10-3),
libgnorba27 (>= 1.0.10-3), libgtk1.2 (>= 1.2.3-1), libpanel-applet0 (>= 1.0.6-2),
orbit (>= 0.4.3-1), xlib6g (>= 3.3.3.1-1), zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.3)

Disguisting, isn't it? :)

Well this I don't understand. Maybe the Alpha build machine had it
installed somehow? I'm CC:ing the -alpha list, so the porter who
did it in the first place can know about it, and fix it.
