dselect fails on install

I partially installed Debian 2.1 on a DEC 2000 (Jensen) but the
dselect fails with "Can't open /var/cache/apt/srcpkgcache.bin".
I installed with floppies and therefore chose the apt access method
in dselect.  Any ideas?
