I put the following in my aboot.conf file:
0:2/boot/vmlinux-2.2.5 ro root=/dev/sda2
1:2/boot/vmlinux ro root=/dev/sda2
You would just add "single" to one of these lines. This method worked
fine for me. Note that I had problems getting aboot to load compressed
kernels. And 2.2.5 works great, btw.
