You indeed take a vanilla 2.0.35, and patch it with exactly ONE of these
patches.

No, the higher the number, the newer it is. I'm still using pre-patch-2,
as that works fine for me, and I can't be bothered :-)  Try the newest
patch by all means (and complain to Alan Cox if it doesn't work).
