Debian install on alpha -- dpkg: memory violation

I've seen this one before, during the install of devel-std:

Unpacking dnsutils (from ../net/dsnutils_8.1.2-2.deb) ...
Adding `diversion of /usr/bin/addr to /usr/bin/addr.bind by dnsutils`
dpkg-deb: memory violation at pc=12000aeb8 rp=12000ae7c (bad address =
100000007)
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
DPKG ERROR

uhm, am I suffering from bad memory?

(UDB, 166 MHz, 24 MB RAM)
