I am able to reproduce it when throwing away my tarball.  No idea what
has gone wrong here.

I made the tarball I am using available from
<URL: http://www.hungry.com/~pere/tmp/ >.  I will remove it from there
in a few days.

I started by adding a comment to #924912, and will see what kind of
feedback come from this before deciding how to continue.
