I tried it, but as far as I can tell, control alt F1 and entering
espeakup
didn't bring it back.
I did check to make sure that the soundcard is connected to the VM.
This has to be done sometimes in VmWare,
The audio will go out and you need to press control alt and tap the alt key
and go down to connected devices, and reconnect the sound card.
But that is not what is happening here.
I just deleted some ISOs from my C: drive and did a disk cleanup, so I'd be
sure to have enough RAM, and rebooted and started over, and I still use
espeakup during the install.
If there is a way to have the printed version of each window during the
install, I can go back to that when the speech in the installer quits, so I
know which window is up next.
This time, I got as far as pressing #1 for entire disk, and I entered, and
the speech died.

On a installation for a physical system you can type control+alt+f1 and
switch to the console, but I can't tell you how to do that with a
virtual system that is in the middle of an install.
One trick you might be able to use is to install 'tesseract'.
sudo apt install tesseract-ocr
Then while the virtual system is active, press the printScreen key.
If ORCA is active it will read the window at least when using
'quickemu'. Now it should let you save a graphical image of the screen.
Now go back to the main system to the directory where the file is
located. It should be screenshot.jpg or screenshot.png.
tesseract screenshot-XYZ.png stdout |less
Maybe it won't work with your setup, test the screenshot part first.
