Sound and is pipewire the problem?

Hi Everyone,
So I deleted the VM and started over, using:
debian-13.2.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso
in VmWare Player.
Twice now, I got part way through the talking installer and the voice just stopped.
I apparently could not finish the install with just the default enters, because it didn't finish installing with just entering.
So I stopped  the VM and booted into my Ubuntu 24X that I installed a long time back.
It needed updating and upgrading, so I did that, there were several hundred packages to be upgraded.
Along the way, it went totally silent too.
In the Ubuntu, I went in with SSH from Windows and tried alsamixer, and it said there were no sound devices.
speaker-test runs with no sound and no errors.
Both aplay and paplay play a small file with no sound and no errors.
Pipewire seems to be present there too.
On the Ubuntu, what can I do to let alsamixer and/or pulseaudio find my soundcard?
I thought that maybe pipewire is muting things, but if amixer does not see a soundcard, I don't know what else I can try in the CLI.
Thanks for any ideas.

Now it's beer, the old lady, and TV.
