There is a setting in VmWare I change for any VM I install, it is in the
hardware tab for a VM, and it is in network.
I think it is the fourth choice, it's been a while since I installed a VM,
but it will allow the guest machine to have its own IP address, not one
built off of the host machine.
This makes it easier to find in the network.
It will then show up as any other computer in the network.

All you need is one with ssh enabled, to which you can log in and
install packages. Debian may have official images - I suggest doing some
research on the Web.
