We need *much* more details to get the slightest idea why it would fail:
- which kind of braille display this is
- how it is connected to the computer
- if it is USB, the output of
cat /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/modalias
- whether
ps | grep brltty
shows brltty as running
- the content of /var/log/syslog
