I'd second just turning the monitor off and it's even possible your laptop has a key combination to do so(try googling turn off screen and the make and model of your laptop)... unfortunately, some laptop makers fail to realize someone might not want their monitor on and will turn it on automatically at every input that isn't the monitor off command.
