Dear Samuel,

It looks fairly easy to disable the wayland backend. I don't have the
time to try right now, but it should be enough to call
  gdk_set_allowed_backends ("x11");
just before gtk_init().

Unfortunately I doubt such change can make it in stretch, with the full
freeze happening in two days.

Regards, Thibaut.
