Enabling expert mode should bring you to the main menu from the start.
If that's not the case, it didn't work.  IIRC "expert" has never been a
boot parameter, it has only been a boot choice.  Now that debian CDs use
the syslinux menu (see section 5.1.7 "The Boot Screen") of the installer
manual, typing expert won't work. Either 

- type the tab key to pass the
priority=low
boot parameter, or
- press down arrow twice to get to advanced options, enter, then down
arrow once to get to expert install, and enter, or
- type h and enter to get to the syslinux prompt, where you can type
expert.

After the installer is started, to get to the main menu you just need to
hit the "go back" button. It however unfortunately doesn't work in all
dialogs.
