I did that, and when I reboot it takes me to VT1 and asks me to 
log in. VT7 is still blank.  This is my :0-greeter.log:

I've downgraded gdm3 from Sid to Squeeze, but it didn't make any 
difference. The /var/log/gdm3/.config directory is empty.
