I'm maintainer [1] for the W window system (WWS):

WWS has full support for Atari 2 bpp, but I think that is useless.

The amount of colors is so low that one cannot do *anything* useful with
them, it's not enough even for a color text terminal.  It's much better
to use e.g. monochrome in that case (assuming monitor supports it) as one
gets larger resolution with better speed.

So, my vote would go for forcing grayscale with 2 bpp, or just not
supporting it at all in X, it's not worth the trouble.

[1] Currently "maintaining" means that at few years intervals I check
  	that it still builds in Debian stable... It's been several years
	since I last got patch or bug mail for it. :-)
