The nativehd and cdrom main menus are the same:

The hd-media flavour goes through "detecting hardware to find hard drives"
and "searching drives for an installer ISO image" stages and seems to
detect the partitions fine (on the quadra that is -- it doesn't use the
mac_scsi driver).
